HMT Pocahontas Trail System

Hatfield McCoys Pocahontas Trail System is the southern most trail in the Hatfield McCoy Trails'(HMT) system. Its main trailhead located in Coaldale, WV has a large 2 acre parking lot and a newer building that has indoor bathrooms and a HMT retail shop. This trailhead is located just off of Hwy 52 so it's really easy to get started hitting the trails. There's a few windy roads but they are plenty wide enough for truck/trailer combos (like the 50 foot combo we rolled in with). There's something here for all Dirt Bike, ATV and UTV riders!

Lots of smaller ATV resorts are located along the area outside the Pocahontas System. Bramwell is the closest city and has easy access to the trail system. The Corner Store in Bramwell is a great place for a meal that has a special "back-in-time" atmosphere. They actually hand make the Coca Colas and milkshakes. On the way into Bramwell as well as the other connected small towns there are other food sources and gas.

Okay, okay let's get to the trails...

The Pocahontas System has a wide range of trails with a good mix of difficulty levels. The trails are well maintained as are just about all the HMT. There is ample mud along side many trails for those who are inclined to get dirty (we are and do get muddy a lot). For example along Trail 13 which is a green trail (easy) there is a good size mud pond (see our videos). Other great mud holes are located at the bottom of 2 black trails (difficult trails). Trails 69 and 80 are pretty rough at the top with a lot of big rock step downs. We typically just go around the top of these trails by using other blue and green trails and hit the mud at the bottom.

In summary Pocahontas is a great! The only complaints would be that there are not enough trails and during dry spells the Green (easy) trails get somewhat dusty. You could hit all the trails in 4 to 5 hours which is great for a day trip. The Pocahontas System does connect to HMT Indian Ridge and from there HMT Pinnacle Creek and HMT Warrior so there are a lot of nearby connected trails.
